Solid state battery on board in 2026 Will mass production be possible?

With the growing global demand for new energy vehicles, the development of battery technology has become one of the core competencies of the automotive industry. GAC Group has made remarkable progress in this field, and its all-solid-state battery technology is expected to be commercially applied in 2026, firstly in its Hao Platinum model, marking a major breakthrough in automotive power battery technology.

GAC's all-solid-state battery technology is highly regarded for its high energy density, high safety and wide temperature range of use. The battery adopts 100% solid-state electrolyte and has an energy density of more than 400Wh/kg, which is a 52% increase in volumetric energy density and a 50% increase in mass energy density compared to liquid lithium-ion batteries currently on the market. This means that cars equipped with all-solid-state batteries will have a range of more than 1,000 kilometers, which greatly alleviates the "mileage anxiety" of electric vehicle users.

In terms of safety, all-solid-state batteries also perform well. It can withstand extreme conditions, such as pinpricks and cuts, without failing, and can even remain stable at high temperatures of 200°C, which fundamentally solves the safety risk of the battery.

GAC has invested heavily in the research and development of all-solid-state batteries, and its technical team has made key breakthroughs in a number of areas, including materials, design, manufacturing and integration. Li Jin, head of the battery R&D department at GAC EAN, compared the difficulty of developing all-solid-state batteries to climbing Mount Everest, which demonstrates GAC's determination and strength in overcoming this technical challenge.

GAC announced a major breakthrough in all-solid-state battery technology at Auto Guangzhou 2023, and further showcased its R&D results at the GAC Technology Day 2024. Currently, GAC's all-solid-state battery has completed the development of a 30Ah high-capacity cell and plans to realize mass production on board in 2026.

All-solid-state batteries are regarded as the future direction of power battery development, which can not only provide higher energy density, but also significantly improve the safety and reliability of electric vehicles. At present, in addition to GAC, BMW, Volkswagen, Toyota, Ford, SAIC, as well as Changan and other well-known car companies are also actively laying out solid-state battery technology, and it is expected that around 2030 will be an important point in time for the realization of the popularity of solid-state batteries.

GAC EAN said that the all-solid-state battery is expected to be mass-produced in 2026, and the first product equipped with this battery is GAC EAN's high-end new energy brand Hao Platinum's models, and in the future, this battery technology will also be down to the EAN brand products.

With the energy density of liquid batteries gradually approaching the current technology on the line, the industry generally believes that all-solid-state batteries may be the direction of change for the next generation of power batteries in the future, which is also one of the important reasons why battery manufacturers and automobile companies are actively investing in the research and development of solid-state batteries. In addition to Guangqi EAN, the current BMW, Volkswagen, Toyota, Ford, SAIC and Changan and other car companies have said that the future will be equipped with solid-state batteries. At present, the industry generally believes that around 2030 will be an important time node for the popularization of solid-state batteries can be realized.
