JEDEC Releases Latest DDR5 and LPDDR 6 Memory Specifications

The JEDEC Solid-State Technology Association1, a standardization pioneer in the global microelectronics industry, has announced the official availability of the highly anticipated DDR5 MRDIMM and LPDDR6 CAMM memory specifications. This is not only a leap forward in the history of memory technology, but also a strong support for high-performance computing and artificial intelligence applications.

DDR5 MRDIMM: A revolution in bandwidth and compatibility

The introduction of the DDR5 MRDIMM (Multiplexed Rank Dual In-Line Memory Module) specification marks a significant increase in memory bandwidth. By employing multiplexing technology, DDR5 MRDIMM is able to transmit more data signals on a single physical channel, with a target bandwidth of 12.8Gbps, which is twice the 6.4Gbps bandwidth of current DDR5 RDIMM memory. This increase means a qualitative leap in data transmission rates in the same physical space.

JEDEC's plan shows that DDR5 MRDIMM will share the same pinouts, SPD (Serial Presence Detection), PMIC (Power Management Integrated Circuit) and other designs as existing DDR5 DIMMs, ensuring compatibility with conventional RDIMM systems. This design concept not only reduces the cost of system upgrades, but also facilitates future technology iterations.

LPDDR6 CAMM: Breathing new power into mobile devices

The LPDDR6 CAMM (Compressed Active Memory Module) specification, released at the same time as DDR5 MRDIMM, is expected to achieve a maximum speed of more than 14.4GT/s and adopt a 24-bit channel width from 128 bits to 192 bits per module and from 32 bits to 48 bits per channel. This design not only improves the data transfer speed, but also improves the energy efficiency ratio of the memory by increasing the channel width and the number of sub-channels, providing a more efficient memory solution for mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets.

The market outlook behind technological innovation

With the rapid development of cloud computing, big data, artificial intelligence and other technologies, the demand for memory bandwidth and capacity is increasing. The introduction of DDR5 MRDIMM and LPDDR6 CAMM comes at the right time to meet the urgent market demand for high-performance memory. According to market research institutions, DDR5 will account for 43% of the entire DRAM market share by 2024, and the widespread application of LPDDR6 CAMM will also occupy an important position in the mobile device market.

Summary

The DDR5 MRDIMM and LPDDR6 CAMM memory specifications published by the JEDEC Solid State Technology Association not only represent the latest developments in memory technology, but also provide enhanced performance and higher energy efficiency for future electronic devices. As these new technologies become more widely available, we look forward to how they will drive progress and innovation across the industry, bringing a more efficient and reliable computing experience to users around the world."

1.                The JEDEC Solid State Technology Association is a global leader in the development of open standards for the microelectronics industry. JEDEC was founded in 1958 as part of the Electronic Industries Alliance (EIA) as the Joint Electron Device Engineering Council (JEDEC). In 1999, JEDEC became its own industry association and changed its name to the JEDEC Solid State Technology Association.
