Edge Impulse collaborates with ST to Develop New Capabilities

Edge Impulse and STMicroelectronics (ST) recently announced a collaboration to develop new capabilities for AI deployment at the edge. Edge Impulse is a leading platform for building, deploying, and scaling machine learning models at the edge, and ST is one of the world's leading semiconductor companies. The collaboration will combine Edge Impulse's cutting-edge AI platform and ST's advanced product technology to develop compelling new capabilities for AI in real-world applications.

Edge AI deployment refers to the direct deployment of AI algorithms and models, such as sensors or Internet of Things (IoT) devices, on devices at the edge of the network, which can process and analyze data in real time without relying on cloud infrastructure. This approach combines the capabilities of edge computing and artificial intelligence to enable machine learning tasks to be executed directly on interconnected edge devices, quickly processing data and providing real-time feedback, with or without an internet connection.

The deployment of AI at the edge can deliver benefits in a number of ways, including increased intelligence, real-time insights, reduced costs, enhanced privacy, high availability, and continuous improvement. For example, in autonomous vehicles, wearables, security cameras, and smart home devices, edge AI can provide users with real-time information in a timely manner. In addition, edge AI has demonstrated its ability to optimize workflows, automate business processes, and innovation opportunities, while also addressing latency, security, and cost reduction.

In practice, edge AI is being used in various industries, such as healthcare, where wearable health monitoring devices can assess metrics such as heart rate, blood pressure, blood sugar levels, and respiration through locally embedded AI models. In manufacturing, sensor data can be used for predictive maintenance, spotting anomalies before they occur and predicting when machines will fail. In retail, intelligent virtual assistants can help users search for items and obtain product information through voice commands.

Through this collaboration, Edge Impulse's production-ready platform will be fully optimized for ST's STM32 microcontrollers. STM32 microcontrollers are an important part of ST's portfolio and are used in a wide range of edge computing and IoT applications. Edge Impulse's technology will enable these microcontrollers to run AI models more efficiently, enabling faster data processing and intelligent decision-making on edge devices.

In addition, the integration of Edge Impulse's generative AI and edge computing capabilities with NVIDIA's Tao and Omniverse platforms will complement ST's previously announced support for the NVIDIA TAO Toolkit and unlock new opportunities for the use of these technologies at the ground level.

It is reported that the cooperation has already begun, and the two companies will launch a series of new products and solutions in the coming months. This collaboration will support customers in integrating AI into their edge environments and help them stay ahead of the curve in this fast-growing space." ST's products and technologies are the cornerstone of thousands of edge deployments around the world, and the partnership with Edge Impulse will provide these customers with new, practical and impactful AI capabilities.

ST executives will also be at Edge Impulse's Imagine 2024 conference to discuss the future of AI at the edge with executives from Capgemini, Nestlé Purina, NVIDIA, and more. This session will further explore how edge AI technology can be leveraged to drive innovation for businesses and developers.

Overall, this collaboration between Edge Impulse and ST marks an important milestone in the field of edge AI and will drive the further development and application of edge AI technology.
