Eggtronic Unveils an Evaluation Board to Speed the Development of Charger

Recently, it was reported that Eggtronic has launched an evaluation board designed to accelerate the development of a 240W PD 3.1 charger. The EV kit may contain the necessary hardware and software tools to help developers and engineers design and test USB PD 3.1 compliant high-power chargers. The USB PD 3.1 standard supports an output of up to 48V 5A and is capable of delivering up to 240W, which is a significant step forward for high-capacity battery devices that require fast charging. The 240W PD 3.1 charger offers significant advantages in terms of fast charging and versatility, such as:

High Power Output: the high power output of 240W enables the PD 3.1 charger to provide fast charging for high-performance laptops, gaming devices, power tools, etc., greatly reducing the charging time and improving the user experience.

Enhanced versatility: the  USB PD 3.1 standard expands the scope of USB PD fast charging technology to cover more types of devices, including some high-voltage powered devices, such as power tools, industrial power supplies, etc., to achieve the goal of "everything can be charged".

Technological advancement: The emergence of PD 3.1 fast charging technology and 240W charging equipment represents the advancement of charging technology and brings new trends to the development of charging technology in the future.

Unified USB-C interface: the  promotion of the USB PD 3.1 standard has helped unify the USB-C interface, enabling different devices to charge and transfer data through the same type of interface and charger, simplifying the user's charging equipment.

When designing USB PD adapters and chargers, consider meeting the latest energy efficiency standards, such as COC V5 Tier2, and consider miniaturized designs to accommodate the trend of mobile portable devices. For instance, onsemi has introduced a 240W totem-pole PFC with a high-frequency quasi-resonant (QR) controller for a dual-tube flyback converter USB PD3.1 EPR adapter and a fast-charging reference design. The design achieves an average efficiency of 95.4% at 230Vac and 48V outputs, standby power consumption of less than 100mW, far exceeding the COC V5 Tier2 standard, and features a compact PCBA size, high power density, and a low-cost, double-layer PCB design for applications such as fast charging for smartphones, laptop adapters, and power tool fast charging.

In addition, Eggtronic's evaluation board may integrate multiple safety and protection features such as over-voltage protection (OVP), over-current protection (OCP), short-circuit protection (SCP), etc., to ensure the reliability and safety of the charger. At the same time, the EV kit may also support a variety of output voltage and current settings to accommodate different charging needs.

The launch of this evaluation board from Eggtronic is undoubtedly good news for manufacturers who want to quickly enter the PD 3.1 charger market, as it can greatly shorten the product development cycle and accelerate the time to market. At the same time, it is also likely to drive the further development and adoption of USB PD 3.1 charger technology.
