Elon Musk‘s X AI Raises 6 Billion to Build Powerful AI Supercomputers

Elon Musk's artificial intelligence company xAI raised $6 billion in its latest funding round, bringing its total funding to $12 billion and valuing the company at $50 billion. The round attracted 97 investors, including top institutions such as NVIDIA, AMD, Andreessen Horowitz, Blackrock, Fidelity, Kingdom Holdings and Sequoia Capital. It's worth noting that the funding round is limited to those who have backed Musk's early-stage projects, such as the Twitter acquisition, with a minimum investment of $77,593, while the identities of most investors have not been disclosed.

"Colossus" supercomputer expansion plan

xAI has built a supercomputer powered by 100,000 NVIDIA H100 GPUs, codenamed "Colossus." Musk said he plans to expand the number of GPUs to 200,000 in the coming months, with the ultimate goal of building a supercomputer of 1,000,000 GPUs. At $30,000 per NVIDIA H100 GPU, that goal would cost about $30 billion.

Supercomputers are the core tools for AI model development, and greater computing power will allow xAI to train more complex large language models, in direct competition with OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's Gemini. These models will not only enhance xAI's existing offerings, but will also provide technical backyards for future R&D.

Technological progress and market layout

xAI has made a breakthrough with its flagship AI model "Grok". Grok has been integrated into Elon Musk's social platform X (formerly Twitter), supporting the chatbot and image generator "Flux" used by advanced users. Compared to OpenAI's ChatGPT, Grok is more flexible in answering sensitive topics while maintaining certain content boundaries. This differentiated design allows xAI's products to gain traction among specific user groups.

Currently, Grok has been applied to SpaceX's Starlink internet service customer support. In addition, xAI is also exploring R&D collaborations with Tesla, such as integrating its AI technology into its autonomous driving platform. However, the plan has also sparked discontent among some Tesla shareholders, who are concerned that Musk may shift resources from Tesla to xAI, creating a potential competition between the two companies.

Challenges and competition

Despite technological advances, xAI's annual revenue is only about $100 million, well below the expected multi-billion dollar revenue targets of rivals OpenAI and Anthropic. Global AI venture capital activity reached $31 billion in Q3 2024, indicating that the space is still expanding rapidly and that xAI needs to compete more aggressively.

In contrast, OpenAI and Anthropic have received strong support from Microsoft and Google, respectively, and their resources and market size are putting direct pressure on xAI. How to accelerate commercialization, expand revenue, and continue to attract capital will be the next major challenges for xAI.

Looking to the future

Under Musk's leadership, xAI has made significant progress in a short period of time through financing and technological innovation. With the expansion plan of the "Colossus" supercomputer and the continuous optimization of the flagship model Grog, xAI is expected to strengthen its market position in the coming years. However, in the fierce competition in the AI market, it will take time and market test to further raise technical barriers and achieve sustainable growth.
