Kopin Corporation, a leading supplier of high-performance microdisplays and optical systems, recently announced a $1.3 million follow-on order for Emerald microdisplay modules. The modules are expected to be used to support a major weapon targeting system product, and subsequent deliveries will continue into a multi-year production program.
Micro display module technology is one of the fastest-growing high-tech fields in recent years, and it plays an important role in augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), head-up display (HUD), and many other applications. The key advantages of miniature display module technologies are their high brightness, high contrast, wide color gamut and fast response time. For example, OLED microdisplays utilize high-mobility monocrystalline silicon backplane technology that can achieve a high resolution of about 4000 ppi, provide rich color and depth, and fast response times, making them ideal for devices such as camera electronic viewfinders (EVFs) and AR/VR headsets. With the continuous advancement of technology and the increasing maturity of the market, miniature display modules are expected to be more widely used in various fields such as consumer electronics, automotive, medical, and military. The collaboration between Kopin and MICLEDI is a reflection of this trend, and their collaboration will advance the development of miniature display technology and support the next generation of vision solutions.

The Emerald Microdisplay Module is a comprehensive system consisting of Kopin's monochrome transmissive active matrix liquid crystal display (AMLCD) with SVGA (800 x 600 resolution) with high-efficiency LED backlight and integrated driver electronics. The module uses the company's CyberDisplay® architecture and has been used in more than 300,000 weapon targeting systems.
Bill Maffucci, senior vice president of business development and strategy at Kopin, said the module is capable of enhancing the United States military's situational awareness and long-range target engagement capabilities due to its superior clarity and brightness. This repeat order is seen as a testament to Kopin's long-standing reputation for quality and reliability.
In addition, Kopin and MICLEDI Microdisplays announced a strategic agreement to co-design, develop and manufacture advanced Micro LED displays to deliver a more immersive and information-rich AR experience used in high-brightness lighting conditions. The collaboration will leverage MICLEDI's unique CMOS production process and Kopin's superior backplane control and driving capabilities, as well as its extensive experience in manufacturing complete display systems, to create full-color Micro LED displays that integrate advanced CMOS technology nodes.
Kopin's technology portfolio includes AMLCD, FLCoS, MicroLED and OLED displays, as well as other advanced optical and low-power ASICs. The company's products are used in a wide range of defense and other industries, and we are committed to providing customers with advanced display technology to meet their needs for high-performance microdisplays.
These latest developments demonstrate Kopin's innovation and expansion in the microdisplay space, further cementing its position in the defense and enterprise markets. With the continuous advancement of technology and the continuous change of the market, Kopin has demonstrated its strong commitment to the future development of the semiconductor industry, aiming to build Taiwan into an innovation center for the global semiconductor industry through talent development, R&D support, and international cooperation.
