Microchip Technology Releases New Multi-Core 64-bit Microprocessor Series

Recently, Microchip Technology announced the launch of its innovative multi-core 64-bit microprocessor family, designed to meet the high-performance needs of intelligent edge computing. The launch of the new product line marks a further expansion of Microchip Technologies in the microprocessor space and strengthens its position as a single-vendor solutions provider.

With the rapid development of real-time compute-intensive applications such as intelligent embedded vision and machine learning, the demand for embedded processing continues to increase, and the requirements for energy efficiency, hardware-level security, and high reliability of edge devices are increasing. Microchip, a leading provider of embedded solutions, aims to meet these growing needs and further expand its computing capabilities with the release of the PIC64 family of products.

The PIC64GX series maintains high pin compatibility with Microchip's PolarFire® SoC FPGA devices in terms of pin design, a design decision that provides unprecedented flexibility in the development of embedded solutions. Developers can easily migrate and scale projects between different platforms, accelerating time to market. At the same time, Microchip offers a comprehensive ecosystem of development tools and supporting software to help developers efficiently configure, develop, debug and validate.

In addition, the PIC64 family of microprocessors is designed for real-time compute-intensive applications such as intelligent embedded vision and machine learning. The growing demand for these applications on edge devices places greater demands on processor efficiency, security, and reliability. PIC64GX MPUs, the first in the series, are particularly suitable for critical sectors such as industrial, automotive, communications, IoT, aerospace and defense.

Technical Highlights:

Powered by a 64-bit RISC-V quad-core processor, the asymmetric multiprocessing (AMP) :P IC64GX MPU is capable of handling complex computational tasks while maintaining the deterministic and responsiveness of the system.

Hardware-level security: Integrated secure boot and secure key storage, as well as fast encryption technology, ensure the security and integrity of your data.

High compatibility: The PIC64GX series is pin-compatible with Microchip’s PolarFire® SoC FPGA devices, providing design flexibility and simplifying the process from concept to product.

Robust software support: including Linux4Microchip resources, real-time operating system Zephyr®, and MPLAB® extensions for VS Code®, provide developers with comprehensive development tools.

In addition to the PIC64GX series for the mid-market market, Microchip also announced the PIC64-HPSC family for aerospace and defense. Known for its superior radiation tolerance and fault tolerance, the series is designed to increase computing performance by more than 100 times to meet the needs of applications in extreme environments. The development of the PIC64-HPSC family with the support and collaboration of NASA-JPL further demonstrates Microchip's leadership in high-end embedded computing.
