Pulsiv Announces a High Efficiency Optimized Reference Design

Pulsiv Limited has announced that a new 65W USB-C GaN-optimized reference design is available that not only delivers high efficiency, but also solves the challenges of thermal performance of power supplies. This highly anticipated innovation is expected to have a profound impact on the USB-C fast charging industry by providing features and benefits that are rarely seen in other designs.

This PSV-RDAD-65USB reference design combines Pulsiv's OSMIUM technology with industry-standard QR flyback circuitry and highly integrated, efficient, compact magnetics. It is the first in a series of designs designed to push the boundaries of power conversion technology by significantly reducing operating temperatures, reducing losses, and saving space. The ultimate goal is to create a sustainable platform for the USB-C standard.

According to Pulsiv, the design demonstrates the ability of OSMIUM technology to enable fast charging without the need for complex high-temperature management. As the power demand for wireless devices increases and charging speeds increase, it has a significant impact on a wide range of products, including mobile phones and power tools. This also makes it even more critical to deliver higher power in a compact space, especially when designing a heat-sensitive solution for wall plug or tabletop use. Pulsiv is able to reduce component temperatures by up to 30% and eliminate inrush currents while providing superior efficiency, making designs safer, smaller, and more reliable.

Pulsiv's OSMIUM reference design significantly improves thermal efficiency and reduces the temperature of critical components by more than 30% compared to other designs. At maximum load, the flyback transformer reaches a temperature of 33.9°C when operating at 230VAC and 30.3°C at 265V, which is only 26.1°C above the ambient temperature. This remarkable achievement is expected to set a new industry standard, enabling 65W fast charging in space-constrained or heat-sensitive applications such as wall plugs with a USB-C port.

In addition, Innoscience's GaN transistors are used in the reference design, which effectively reduces RDSon and parasitic capacitance, which minimizes losses and optimizes the cost of flyback and synchronous rectifier subsystems.

Potential market impact

Mobile Device Charging: As the demand for fast charging in mobile devices increases, this high-efficiency, low-heat 65W USB-C GaN reference design will provide a faster and safer charging solution for smartphones, tablets, and more.

Laptop Power Supplies: For laptops that require higher power charging, Pulsiv's reference design provides a possible solution that helps enable a smaller and more efficient power adapter.

Power Accessories Market: With the proliferation of the USB-C interface, this optimized reference design is likely to drive innovation in the power accessories market, providing consumers with more efficient and portable charging options.

Environmental impact: This contributes to the overall energy consumption and carbon footprint due to the high-efficiency power supply design that reduces energy loss, which is a positive impact on environmental protection.

Technology standardization: This reference design from Pulsiv has the potential to drive standardization of USB-C GaN power technology, leading to a shift toward higher efficiency and smaller form factors across the industry.
