Qualcomm Working on Mixed Reality Smart Glasses with Google and Samsung

Recently, Qualcomm CEO Cristiano · Amon revealed that Qualcomm is working with Samsung and Google to develop a new mixed reality glasses. The glasses will be tightly connected to smartphones, providing users with a new immersive experience while opening a new chapter in smart wearables.

The development of this mixed reality glasses marks the in-depth cooperation between the three tech giants in the MR field. Qualcomm, the world's leading wireless communications technology company, has been driving the development of mobile technology, while Samsung and Google have strong capabilities in hardware manufacturing and operating systems, respectively. The aim of this collaboration is to combine the best of all three parties to create a mixed reality glasses that work seamlessly with smartphones.

Unlike Apple's standalone headset, the Vison Pro, the glasses are more focused on working with smartphones, aiming to provide a more convenient user experience by projecting the content of the phone into the glasses with simple operations. Amon said that their goal is to make the glasses available to every smartphone user, which not only reflects Qualcomm's confidence in the market potential of the product, but also shows its ambitions in the MR field.

According to market research, the market size for virtual reality and augmented reality headsets is still smaller than that of smartphones. The International Data Corporation expects VR and AR headset shipments to reach 9.7 million units this year, well below the forecast of 1.23 billion smartphones. Consumers say AR and VR devices are uncomfortable to wear and inconvenient to carry. The person in charge said that the purpose of developing smart glasses is to solve this problem.

Qualcomm has launched the Snapdragon AR1 Gen 1 chip, which is designed for smart glasses, which will provide powerful computing power for mixed reality glasses. Qualcomm has been emphasizing that its chip technology can enable AI applications to run directly on the device, reducing reliance on the cloud, which will bring smoother and more efficient performance to mixed reality glasses.

It is reported that Samsung's mixed reality glasses are tentatively named "Samsung Infinite" and are expected to cost about $1,500 and are scheduled to be launched to consumers in the second half of 2024. This price point is more affordable than the $3,499 price of Apple's Vison Pro, which is expected to attract more consumers' attention.

This partnership not only demonstrates Samsung's significant progress in the field of virtual reality, but also demonstrates the long-standing partnership between Qualcomm, Samsung and Google in smartphones and XR technology. With the continuous development of mixed reality technology, these glasses are expected to set off a revolutionary storm in the MR market, bringing users a more colorful virtual world experience.

With the continuous advancement of smart wearable devices, mixed reality glasses are expected to become the perfect companion for smartphones, providing users with richer and more convenient ways to interact. This alliance between Qualcomm, Samsung and Google will undoubtedly accelerate this process and bring new vitality and innovation to the future smart wearable device market.
