Renesas Unveils 4th Generation R-Car Automotives SoCs

Renesas Electronics, a leading global provider of advanced semiconductor solutions, recently expanded its popular R-Car family with next-generation system-on-chips (SoCs) for entry-level advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). These new devices include an expansion of the R-Car V4M series and the existing R-Car V4H series, which offer powerful AI processing power and fast CPU performance while striking a careful balance between performance and power consumption.

Based on the same advanced 7nm manufacturing process technology as the powerful R-Car V4H series, the R-Car V4M series delivers up to 17 TOPS deep learning performance and leverages in-vehicle cameras, radar, and lidar for high-speed image processing and precise object recognition. The new devices in the R-Car V4M and R-Car V4H series are ideal for entry-level, cost-sensitive ADAS applications such as front-looking smart camera systems, surround view systems, automated parking, and driver monitoring systems.

These new devices excel in power efficiency, delivering up to 9 TOPS/W of performance, thanks to their highly integrated design and leading-edge manufacturing process technology. In a typical full-featured smart camera with an 8-megapixel sensor, the R-Car V4M consumes about 5 watts, which is 50% lower than similar devices on the market.

Renesas has already provided samples of the R-Car V4M and R-Car V4H devices to leading automakers, with mass production planned for the first quarter of 2026. In addition, Renesas has introduced the R-Car Open Access (RoX) platform, which provides software developers with a complete software development environment to develop the next generation of vehicles with safe and continuous software updates faster.

Features of R-Car V4M and R-Car V4H series

- Dedicated automotive interfaces:CAN、Ethernet AVB、TSN and FlexRay

- BOM optimized for NCAP, GSR2, L2+, using single-chip SoC

- Scalability within the R-Car family

- Dedicated power management ICs (PIMICs) and power transistors are available

By expanding its ADAS portfolio, Renesas is committed to meeting the growing demand for L1 and L2 ADAS solutions in the mass market, while developing a new generation of R-Car SoCs to further strengthen its product offerings in the ADAS, cockpit, gateway, and infotainment segments.

"We are expanding our ADAS offerings to meet the growing demand for Level 1 and Level 2 ADAS solutions for mass-market vehicles," said the general manager of Renesas' High Performance Computing SoC Business Unit. At the same time, Renesas is developing its new fifth-generation R-Car SoC, which will further enhance Renesas' offerings in the ADAS, cockpit, gateway, and infotainment areas. Renesas is committed to providing the broadest range of automotive embedded processor solutions for all vehicle models, from entry-level to luxury, on a single development platform. To date, Renesas has shipped more than 450 million automotive-grade R-Car devices, including those that meet the ASIL D quality rating, which represents the highest level of risk reduction. Renesas is currently providing samples of the R-Car V4M and R-Car V4H devices to leading automakers, with mass production scheduled for the first quarter of 2026.
