Samsung's Latest SSD is Coming soon, will it Feature PCIe 5.0 Technology?

Samsung is reportedly preparing at least two of its latest SSDs to compete for a spot on the list of best SSDs. According to the website of KIPRIS, the Korean Industrial Property Information Service Center, Samsung has applied for the registration of two trademarks, "990 EVO Plus" and "9100 PRO". These trademarks belong to the category of energy storage products, including USB flash drives, NAND flash memory, and SSDs (solid state hard drives).

It is reported that the 990 EVO Plus will be an upgraded version of the existing 990 EVO SSD. The new 990 EVO Plus will further improve performance while maintaining the original features as Samsung's end-market SSD that has been recognized by the market for its high performance and energy efficiency. According to the current information, the 990 EVO Plus will continue to have a 2280 M.2 specification, weigh about 9 grams, support PCIe 4.0x4 and PCIe 5.0x2 lanes, and provide maximum sequential read and write speeds of 5000MB/s and 4200MB/s respectively, with random read and write speeds of up to 700K IOPS and 800K IOPS.

The 990 Evo delivers sequential read and write speeds of up to 5,000 MB/s and 4,200 MB/s, respectively. Conversely, the 990 Pro is rated for sequential performance of 7,450 MB/s read and 6,900 MB/s write. The 990 Evo Plus has plenty of room to fall somewhere in between without the need for a product teardown. In order to achieve this feat, Samsung would logically have to equip the 990 Evo Plus with a faster NAND to provide a significant upgrade over the regular 990 Evo; Otherwise, the 990 Evo Plus won't have any advantages.

In addition, the capacity of the 990 EVO Plus has also been upgraded, and the maximum capacity of the 990 EVO is currently 2TB, so the 990 EVO Plus may be available in a 4TB version, thus being on the same level as the 990 Pro in terms of density.

Compared to the 990 EVO Plus, the 9100 PRO's naming doesn't seem to follow Samsung's existing naming conventions for consumer-grade storage products, which has sparked widespread speculation about its possible uses. Some analysts believe that the 9100 PRO may be related to Samsung's PCIe 5.0 high-performance SSD, which has not yet been fully launched, and may be the new SSD components such as the main control or memory chip. However, since Samsung has not officially revealed any specific information, these are only speculations based on the current situation.

Samsung's technological innovation in the field of SSDs has been highly anticipated by the market. The launch of the 990 EVO Plus will further solidify Samsung's leadership position in the high-performance SSD market. At the same time, the trademark registration of the 9100 PRO also shows Samsung's positive attitude in exploring new technologies and products.

Although there is not much specific information about these two new products at this time, it is foreseeable that with the launch of the 990 EVO Plus and 9100 PRO, Samsung will continue to push the boundaries of storage technology and provide consumers with more high-performance storage solutions. The industry and consumers alike are looking forward to the official launch of these two new products to get a glimpse of Samsung's latest achievements in the field of SSDs.
