Samsung SDI Agrees to Build EV Battery Plant in US with GM

According to reports, Samsung SDI and General Motors have reached an agreement to build a joint venture electric vehicle battery plant in Indiana, United States, with a total investment of about $3.5 billion. The plant plans to start mass production of cells in 2027 and has an initial annual production capacity of 27GWh, which is expected to increase to 36GWh after expansion.

In addition, the plant will produce nickel-cobalt-aluminum (NCA) ternary high-performance nickel-rich prismatic batteries, which are expected to be used in GM's future electric vehicles. The 680-acre facility is expected to bring more than 1,600 local jobs. Samsung SDI plans to invest USD 1.7 billion by March 2028 to acquire a 50.01% stake in the joint venture plant. This collaboration will drive innovation and adoption in the field of electric vehicles and could have a profound impact on the industry as a whole.

Technical Highlights:

High-performance nickel-rich prismatic batteries

The plant will produce high-performance nickel-rich prismatic cells based on nickel-cobalt-aluminum (NCA) ternary materials. Known for its high energy density, these batteries can significantly increase the range of electric vehicles and meet consumer demand for long-distance driving.

High-performance nickel-rich prismatic cells offer several significant advantages over conventional batteries:

High energy density: Nickel-rich prismatic batteries have a higher energy density than conventional batteries, which means they can provide more power for the same volume or weight, significantly increasing the range of electric vehicles.

Cost-effectiveness: Kurt Kelty, GM's vice president of batteries and packs, mentioned that prismatic batteries will join GM's battery technology portfolio to help GM continue to improve battery performance and reduce costs in the future.

Moreover, compared to some conventional batteries, high-performance nickel-rich prismatic batteries can maintain good performance over a wider range of temperatures, which is essential for the operation of electric vehicles in different climatic conditions.

"Super Gap"Technology

Samsung SDI's PRiMX battery products feature innovative "Super Gap" technology designed to improve battery performance and safety. The application of this technology will provide more stable and reliable energy support for GM's electric vehicles.

Security by design

Samsung SDI's prismatic battery adopts a metal casing and exhaust system, which not only enhances the structural strength of the battery, but also improves safety under extreme conditions, ensuring the stable operation of electric vehicles in various environments.

Market & Economic Impact

The establishment of this joint venture is expected to provide a significant boost to the local economy. The construction and operation of the plant will create more than 1,600 jobs and have a positive impact on the local job market and economic development. In addition, as the electric vehicle market continues to expand, the establishment of this plant will also strengthen GM's competitiveness in the North American market.
