Will Samsung Benefit from Nvidia's New AI Chip Delay?

Samsung Electronics, the world's largest maker of memory chips, is expected to benefit from delayed shipments of Nvidia's AI chips, as the world's big tech companies may look for alternatives to meet their AI chip needs. According to media reports, Nvidia recently notified major customers such as Microsoft and Google that the shipment of its Blackwell AI accelerator will be delayed for at least three months due to design flaws.

According to industry analysts, this delay may cause big technology companies to seek products from other suppliers, such as AMD. In fact, Microsoft and Google are already working with AMD on next-generation products and have already purchased the MI300X, an AI accelerator from United States fabless semiconductor design house.

Samsung Electronics, AMD's fourth-generation high-bandwidth memory-3 (HBM3) chipset supplier, is expected to continue to supply fifth-generation HBM3E chips. A semiconductor industry source noted: "There is a huge risk for any company to dominate the AI chip supply chain. As a result, Samsung and AMD will face huge opportunities. "According to industry body TechInsights, Nvidia dominated the global AI accelerator space last year with a market share of 97.2%.

In March 2025, NVIDIA announced the Blackwell series of AI accelerators, which it claims can help customers build and run real-time generative AI on large language models with thousands of parameters at a 25x lower cost than the previous generation.

However, media reports point out that the problem is with the GB200 model, the highest-end of the Blackwell series, which has a processor chip that has problems connecting two Blackwell graphics processing units. Tech Media expects the Blackwell AI Accelerator to begin deliveries to customers in the first quarter of 2025.

Nvidia said that despite the delay, the production of AI accelerators will increase in the second half of the year, and did not comment on market rumors. Delays in the production of the Blackwell series could impact big tech companies' plans to expand their AI businesses and raise concerns about a single company dominating the market.

Nvidia's major customers have placed tens of billions of dollars worth of orders for the GB200 model, prompting Nvidia to ask Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (TSMC) to improve the yield of chips by 25 percent. As a major foundry in the field of AI accelerators, TSMC expects its market contribution to exceed 95%. At the same time, Samsung plans to capture this S market opportunity through its foundry packaging services.
