Wuhan University's School of Artificial Intelligence Inaugurated: Lei Jun Contributes 1.3 Billion to Promote Industry-Academia Collaboration

Today, the School of Artificial Intelligence of Wuhan University was officially inaugurated, marking a new step in the research and education of the university in the field of artificial intelligence. The newly established college was headed by Professor Zhang Pingwen, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and president of Wuhan University. This event has not only attracted widespread attention in the academic community, but also attracted the attention of the industry, especially the positive response of Xiaomi Group, indicating a new trend of deep integration of industry, university and research in the future.

Discipline construction and scientific research direction

The School of Artificial Intelligence of Wuhan University relies on the advantageous disciplines and key research institutions of Wuhan University, focusing on four fields: mathematical foundation and data science, machine learning and intelligent science, intelligent natural science and intelligent social science. The School strives to achieve breakthroughs in cutting-edge fields such as "AI + Science", "AI + Engineering", "AI + Medicine", and "AI + Humanities and Social Sciences". This interdisciplinary research direction reflects the forward-looking and comprehensive nature of Wuhan University in the field of artificial intelligence.

The establishment of the college is not only a measure of Wuhan University to respond to the national strategic needs of artificial intelligence, but also a deep integration of the international frontier of artificial intelligence. The college will deeply integrate the advantages and school-running resources of the school's computer science, mathematics, information management, surveying, mapping and remote sensing and other digital intelligence-related disciplines, and make every effort to build a talent training base, a science and technology innovation center and a high-quality development empowerment platform in the field of artificial intelligence.

Faculty and talent development

The college has the Department of Artificial Intelligence Theory, the Department of Artificial Intelligence Application, the Institute of Artificial Intelligence and the Experimental Teaching Center, which will increase the introduction and cultivation of top-notch talents in the future and further improve the level of the teaching staff. In terms of talent training, the school will recruit undergraduate students in the major of "artificial intelligence", academic master's and doctoral students in the discipline of "intelligent science and technology", and professional master's and doctoral students in the discipline of "electronic information" from 2025. This multi-level talent development program aims to cultivate AI talents with international competitiveness.

The School of Artificial Intelligence of Wuhan University plans to recruit and train about 150 undergraduates every year (including about 120 students per year for the college entrance examination and 30 for changing majors/year), with the construction of a digital intelligence education system as the core, breaking disciplinary barriers, gathering digital intelligence resources, and exploring advanced and flexible operating mechanisms.

The integration of industry and education is a cooperation with Xiaomi Group

Wang Fei, General Manager of Wuhan Region of Xiaomi Group, expressed his warm congratulations on the establishment of the School of Artificial Intelligence of Wuhan University, and looked forward to Xiaomi establishing a closer cooperative relationship with the new school, realizing resource sharing and complementary advantages through the integration of industry and education, and jointly promoting the research and development and application of artificial intelligence technology. This cooperation model of integration of industry and education not only contributes to the transformation of scientific research achievements of the college, but also provides a platform for students to practice and find employment.

Wang Fei, general manager of Xiaomi Group in Wuhan, said at the inauguration ceremony that he expects Xiaomi to establish a closer cooperative relationship with the new college, realize resource sharing and complementary advantages through the integration of industry and education, and jointly promote the research and development and application of artificial intelligence technology.

Lei Jun's donation and the future development of Wuhan University

On November 29 last year, Lei Jun, a 1987 alumnus of the Department of Computer Science of Wuhan University and founder, chairman and CEO of Xiaomi Group, donated 1.3 billion yuan to his alma mater. Lei Jun said that the donation mainly focuses on three directions: supporting the basic research of mathematics, physics, chemistry, literature, history and philosophy, supporting scientific and technological innovation in the field of computer, and supporting the training of college students. This huge donation not only reflects Lei Jun's deep affection for his alma mater, but also demonstrates his strong support for education.

Lei Jun's donation is the largest single donation since the founding of Wuhan University, and it is also the largest personal cash donation received by a university in China. The funds will be mainly used to support the research of basic disciplines such as mathematics, physics and chemistry, literature, history and philosophy, scientific and technological innovation in the field of computer science, and the improvement of the comprehensive quality of college students.

Conclusions and prospects
